The Story Behind The Lens

Hi, I’m Steve. For as long as I can remember, life has been viewed through a viewfinder. My journey began not with a grand landscape, but in the quiet, flickering glow of an oil lamp during a winter ice storm. There, holding my father’s old Pentax Spotmatic 500, I captured my very first image: a portrait of my mother. That single moment sparked a lifelong conversation with light and shadow.

That shared language of photography defined much of my relationship with my dad. I watched him transition from that manual Pentax to one of the world's first autofocus cameras, the Minolta Maxxum 7000. I still chuckle recalling their slogan--“Only the human eye focuses faster”—which, looking back, was likely only true because the competition hadn’t arrived yet. But that camera became my catalyst. It wasn't long before the student became the teacher, and Dad began asking me about exposure and technique. Those hours spent side-by-side in the field were about more than f-stops and shutter speeds; they were a masterclass in patience and observation.
For two decades, I took that passion into the professional world. Despite once claiming I would never do portrait work, I spent nearly twenty years documenting weddings and capturing portraits, loving the energy of every session. However, as the digital revolution saturated the market, I made the difficult decision to pivot back to the traditional workforce, leaving full-time photography behind. At the time, walking away felt devastating, but in hindsight, it was a divine redirection. Stepping away from the pressure of commercial work allowed me to rediscover my first love: the unmanipulated beauty of the natural world.

Today, my lens is turned outward, toward the majesty of the world God has gifted us. My passion has expanded from terrestrial landscapes to the infinite depth of the cosmos—a fascination I also inherited from my father. I have since built a dedicated observatory in a quiet, dark area in the country, where I delve into deep-space astrophotography. It is a discipline of extreme patience, often requiring upwards of 80 hours of exposure time to reveal a single, breathtaking image of the heavens.

We live in a world that rushes past the miraculous, and my goal is simply to hit the pause button. Whether it is the intricate detail of a landscape here on earth or the silent grandeur of a nebula light-years away, I strive to capture the undeniable beauty of God’s creation. I want my images to invite you to stop, look closer, and be filled with a renewed sense of awe, reminding us that, as the Psalmist wrote, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."

A Personal Commitment to Authenticity

The integrity of my work is deeply important to me. As a witness to the extraordinary, I believe that the power of an image lies in its connection to the real, created world. For me, photography is an act of worship, and that devotion requires a foundation of truth and transparency in every piece I share.

In an era of synthetic imagery, Steven Paul Photography remains committed to the craft of traditional, light-based art. Every piece in these collections is an authentic photograph, captured through a physical lens and a deliberate moment of witness. These are not products of artificial intelligence; they are the result of patience, presence, and the pursuit of the extraordinary in the natural world.

While the vast majority of my work captures a singular moment in time, I occasionally explore the boundaries of fine art through conceptual compositions. To evoke a specific feeling of wonder or to create a more "dream-like" perspective of the Divine, I may artistically blend two or more of my own original images into a single frame. This process allows me to transcend technical constraints and better illustrate the majesty of the heavens and the earth. To ensure you can curate your collection with absolute certainty, I provide full transparency for every work of art. In any instance where a piece is an artistic composite of separate captures, this will be explicitly noted in the description. This commitment to honesty ensures that you always know the story behind the lens and can trust the integrity of the art you bring into your home.
